Buyer's guide

Buying a VIP mobile number

A number like 98xxx22222 can sell for many times the price of an ordinary connection. Here's how the market works and how to buy without getting burned.

What you're actually buying

In most countries, including India, telephone numbers are a national resource allocated to operators; subscribers get the right to use a number, not ownership of it. When you "buy" a VIP number you are paying for that right to be assigned to you — either directly by the operator or by a seller who transfers it to you.

Two ways to get one

From the operator

Major operators offer "choice" or "fancy" numbers in their apps, websites and stores, usually for a modest one-time fee, sometimes more for premium patterns. Safest route; limited to what's in stock.

From a reseller

VIP number dealers hold large inventories of patterned numbers and transfer them through the operator's official process. Much wider choice and higher prices; quality varies.

How a legitimate transfer works

  1. You choose and pay for the number (ideally part-payment until it's active in your name).
  2. The connection is transferred to you through the operator — often via a "transfer of ownership" for postpaid, or a fresh activation in your name.
  3. You complete KYC in your own name with your own ID, through the operator.
  4. You verify in the operator's app that the number is registered to you.

Red flags

  • Asked to pay 100% upfront to an individual's account with no invoice.
  • A SIM delivered already activated in someone else's name.
  • "No KYC needed" — a number in another person's name can be reclaimed by them, and using it may break the law.
  • Prices far below the market for platinum patterns.
  • No company address, GST number (in India) or verifiable reviews.

What drives price

Pattern rarity (repdigits > long runs > sequences > mirrors), the operator and circle, how many distinct digits, the ending, and cultural digits (8s, 9s, 786). Check any number's pattern strength with our VIP score before you negotiate.
